PHONE STARTER IDEAS

Phone topics should be a part of your radio show. Believe it or not, a lot of morning shows don't do phone topics. IMPORTANT: Listeners love to interact with radio personalities. Also, listeners love to hear people call in to radio shows. There is a science to great phone topics. Here are some things you should know about phone topics:

-A properly set up phone topic will definitely get your phones ringing.
-A poorly set up phone topic will bore your listeners - and you won't get any calls.
-Listeners love to talk about relationship-related issues.
-Listeners love to share their knowledge.
-Listeners love to talk about themselves.

THE SETUP

When doing a phone topic, don't start by saying: "Our phone topic today is..." Set up the phone topic with some kind of story - even if you have to make up a story. EXAMPLE: Instead of saying: "Our topic today is: Tell us your funny contact lens story," try something like: "Yesterday, I dropped one of my contact lenses. After 15 minutes of searching, I found it stuck to the toilet. Tell us your contact lens story." (FYI: Anybody who wears contact lenses has a story to tell.

RELATIONSHIP-RELATED TOPICS

Again, listeners love to talk about relationship-related issues. There are a million things you can talk about, concerning relationships. Here are some examples:

-Does a woman have the right to dip into her man's wallet and take a few bucks? Should she have to ask?

-Ladies, does your man spend more time in his man cave than he spends with you?

-Guys, do you hate it when your wife/girlfriend dresses sexy when she goes out with her friends?

Here are some great phone starters your listeners will enjoy responding to:

-Ladies, would you rather see your man shave his head totally bad or walk around with a balding head (with a little bit of hair)?

-Does your spouse insist that the family pet sleep sleep in bed with you?
